4th Science popularization contest EcotoQ | Alice Carle

Alice Carle, student at UQAM with the Professors Maikel Rosabal and Marc Amyot is interested by platinum and palladium’s toxicity for Hyalella azteca. Discover this poem named La gloire est finie

Project summary

The platinium group elements (PGE) play a major role in the worldwide economy and are part of the critical and strategic minals for the the ecoomic development of Québec. There is however no criteria as to the soil’s quality for these elements because toxicologic data are lacking. By doing laboratory experiments, we evaluated the acute toxicity of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), two soluble and toxic PGE for the freshwater epibenthic invertebrate Hyalella azteca. Often used in aquatic toxicology as a bioindicator of the sediment quality, survival and growth are measured and used as evaluation criteria of the effect of platinum and palladium doped sediments. No observed effect concentration (NOEC), lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) or the average effect concentration (EC50) are evaluated to supply toxicologic data on Pt and Pd to the environment managers. These numbers will contribute to developing quality criteria for the protection of aquatic ecosystems.
